What’s a Mesh?

A mesh network using protocol technology such as Meshtastic or MeshCore uses low-power, inexpensive LoRa (Long Range) radios to create a decentralized, off-grid communication network that operates without cellular service or internet. Nodes (devices) communicate directly with each other, automatically relaying messages for others to extend range, forming a mesh network that works up to 200 miles in ideal conditions.

The Technology Meshtastic and MeshCore are both decentralized LoRa radio mesh protocols, differing primarily in network structure, routing efficiency, and user onboarding. The technology lets you send text messages over radio waves (no cell service or internet needed). A small, affordable device pairs to your phone over bluetooth and transmits your messages across the mesh of other radio connected devices.

  • Meshtastic uses a plug-and-play, self-organizing approach where every node acts as a repeater, making it easy to join but prone to congestion at scale.
  • MeshCore uses dedicated, role-based infrastructure (only explicit repeaters route traffic) supporting higher hop counts for structured coverage.
